Dear Mountaineer Families, As we strive for excellence in our school district, your input and feedback are invaluable to us. Over the past year, I have been working with several groups within our school community, including the school board, staff, parents, and business partners. This project includes developing and implementing a district-wide strategic plan, and we want to ensure that your voices are heard in shaping the future of our schools. To achieve this, we are launching a Strategic Planning Survey designed to gather your thoughts, ideas, and aspirations for our school district. Your participation in this survey will provide us with crucial insights to chart a course that aligns with the needs and expectations of our community. The survey will cover various aspects of our educational system, including curriculum, facilities, technology, extracurricular activities, and more. Your responses will help us identify priorities, set goals, and make informed decisions that will enhance the quality of education we provide to our students. We understand the demands on your time and appreciate your commitment to your child's education. Therefore, we have ensured that the survey is straightforward and should take at most about 5 minutes to complete. Your candid feedback will play a significant role in shaping the future of our school district, so we encourage you to participate. The survey will be open until the end of day October 31, 2023 and we kindly ask that you complete it at your earliest convenience. Your responses will remain confidential, and the aggregated data will be used solely for the purpose of strategic planning. We are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead and are confident that, with your valuable input, we can make our school district an even better place for our students to learn and grow. Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our educational community. Together, we can create a brighter future for our children. Sincerely, Jerry Sardina Superintendent

After a lesson on the importance of our flag and ways to respect the flag, sixth grade students at East Elementary School worked together to fold the American flag that once hung in the Iron Mountain High School Gymnasium with the help of Air Force retiree, Mr. Joshua Chevalier this Tuesday.
Mr. Joshua Chevalier has been shadowing teachers and educational assistants this summer and fall at Iron Mountain Public Schools through the SkillBridge program. SkillBridge is a Department of Defense program that gives service members the opportunity to work and learn in civilian career fields to prepare for the civilian workforce. Mr. Chevalier has been an integral part of working with staff and students in our Summer School program at North Elementary School and with the day to day operations at East Elementary School. North Elementary students were taught a lesson about fire safety on Tuesday by the City of Iron Mountain Fire Department with help from the Iron Mountain Fire Safety House. After a tour of a fire engine, students learned to crawl on their hands and knees through a mock house fire and how to escape safely. The Fire Safety House has been helping youngsters learn about fire safety since 1994. The traveling trailer makes its way across the UP to local school districts every year. Thank you to Sandy Lapp, Nate Furton, Tyler Skoglund, Steve Olson, and the rest of the Iron Mountain Fire Department for the awesome learning experience! Notification 10/3/23, 12:28 PM
A minor electrical fire involving a boom truck at Saint Mary and Saint Joseph Catholic Church started at approximately 12:10 PM this afternoon. The fire has since been extinguished and the Iron Mountain Police and Fire Departments are on scene. All students have been directed away from the scene and all are safe. Thank you. Mountaineer alum, Marc Koerschner stopped in Monday morning for a conversation with Mrs. Carey’s and Mr. Christiansen’s chemistry and Mrs. Yake’s algebra 2 classes!
During his visit, the Mountaineer spoke about his college, post baccalaureate, and professional experiences, including traveling to Greenland to study climate his junior year. Students had the opportunity to ask questions and learn about options available to them after their time at Iron Mountain High School. Marc shared the importance of chemistry, biology, and mathematics in his line of study. Marc graduated from IMHS in 2016 and from the University of Michigan in 2020 with a Bachelor of Science (BSE) in Aerospace Engineering. This spring, he graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with his MSE Aerospace with a focus on conceptual system design, resilient systems, trajectory optimization and sizing of spacecraft. Now, Marc is working on his PhD in Aerospace at Georgia Tech. The class was interested in his working thesis on the concept of self-healing buildings! Marc stressed the importance of taking on intimidating goals and concepts “day by day, and all the sudden you will realize, that you are also doing something super cool that you never really thought you were going to be able to do.” Marc, you make #MountaineersEverywhere proud and we are so grateful for your visit. It was great to see you! Thank you! Hello and good morning!

On December 10, 2015 a new Federal education law was signed by the President. This law, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), requires schools who receive federal Title I funding to ensure that all teachers teaching in a program supported with Title I funding must hold appropriate state certification and licensure requirements, including any requirements for certification obtained through alternative routes to certification. The law also requires us to notify parents if their child is being taught for four or more consecutive weeks by a teacher in a Title I school or program who does not yet meet the definition of “appropriate state certification.” This letter is to inform you that your child’s teacher is in the process of meeting these requirements, and we are providing him/her the support necessary for success. Your child’s teacher is dedicated to the success of every child in their class. Thank you for your continued support of your child’s education, and we encourage you to communicate with their teacher on a regular basis so that together we can provide your child with the best education possible. The following teachers fall within this category: Ms. Curry-Backlund Early Kindergarten Ms. Spencer —3rd grade teacher Mrs. Hart – Special Education, North Elementary Ms. Pacheco – Art, Drama, Health North El. and MS Mr. Johnson – Physical Education, North El. and 5th grade Ms. Nattiel – Special Education, Middle School Mrs. Haferkorn – Computer 7 and 8, Science 8 Sincerely, Andrew Mendini, Principal |
