IMPS receives life-saving device from Wes Leonard Heart Team

12/20/2022

Picture
Iron Mountain Public Schools extends their gratitude to the Wes Leonard Heart Team for their donation of a Cardiac Science G5 Fully Automatic AED for the health and safety of our students, staff, and visitors.

An automated external defibrillator, or AED, is used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. It is a sophisticated, yet easy to use, medical device that can analyze the heart's rhythm, and if necessary, deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm.

The Wes Leonard Heart Team was created in memory of Wes Leonard, a sixteen-year old Fennville High School basketball player who collapsed on the court after making a game winning shot in 2011. It was later determined Leonard died of sudden cardiac arrest. The team brings awareness to the importance of automated external defibrillators in schools, and helps with providing AEDs to schools that have need for the expensive devices.

The donation from the Wes Leonard Heart Team brings the district’s AED total to six. The AEDs are spread throughout the district gymnasiums and school buildings on campus, placed strategically to allow the user to attain the device in the least amount of precious life-saving time. Iron Mountain Public Schools Nurse, Kathleen “Cookie” Brooks, applied for and acquired the $1900 life-saving device. “At Iron Mountain Public Schools, we have students with cardiac issues. One in three hundred youth are living with undetected heart conditions. Just having the AED in our schools is not enough. We, the nurses, are meeting with staff this month to run drills and make sure our Medical Emergency Response team knows how and when to use the AEDs.”

Iron Mountain Public Schools is proud to have a MI HEARTSafe School designation from Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Michigan Department of Education, American Heart Association, Michigan High School Athletic Association, and Michigan Alliance for Prevention of Sudden Cardiac Death of the Young. The district’s buildings met standards that indicate preparation and readiness for cardiac emergencies during the 2020-2021 school year and will have the MI HEARTSafe designation until the end of the 2022-2023 school year. These standards include multiple drills and learning opportunities for school staff. In the event of a sudden cardiac arrest, the district is ready to implement the chain of survival to save lives.

Host families needed as soon as possible

12/12/2022

We ask for your help in the search for a host family or host families beginning as soon as possible for two current Iron Mountain High School exchange students.  They have been with Iron Mountain Public Schools since the beginning of the school year and we would like to keep them in our district as they are wonderful young ladies!

One is a 15 year old  (sophomore) female from Spain and the other is a 17 year old (senior) female from Italy.

These students would really love to stay, as planned, until the end of the school year (May 26th).  The girls can share a bedroom but must have their own bed and dresser, or we can place them with two host families. While it is preferred the host family lives in Iron Mountain, it can be anywhere in Dickinson County.

If you are interested in helping these students continue their Mountaineer experience,  please contact Dawn Smith at smithd@imschools.org, or by phone at 906-779-2610 X4318.

More information regarding hosting a student through "International Experience" is available here:

District Calendar Changes

12/9/2022

Good afternoon Mountaineer families,

Please note, there are two major changes to our District Calendar:
  1. There will be no school on Monday, January 2, 2023. Class for Iron Mountain Public Schools will resume from Winter Break on Tuesday, January 3, 2023.
  2. There will be school on Monday, February 13, 2023, which has previously been communicated as “Mid-Winter Break”.

According to Michigan Revised School Code, public schools must recognize the New Year's Day holiday on Monday, January 2, due to the holiday falling on a Sunday. Several Dickinson-Iron ISD school districts have recently changed their district calendars to reflect this recent finding.

The District Calendars have been updated on the school website to reflect the change: https://www.imschools.org/district-calendar.html

Thank you for your understanding.
Happy Holidays!
