Mountaineers and Jets Come Together to Raise Money for Weaver Family

1/31/2023

The Iron Mountain and North Central Jets communities filled the gym in Eskymo orange and came together on Monday night at the Varsity Boys Basketball game to raise $3,340 for the Weaver family during a halftime Miracle Minute.
$2,740 was donated by attendees and $600 was donated from the gate proceeds. We are all in awe of the incredible night.

Thank you Mountaineers and Jets for your generosity and a special thank you to the IMHS Varsity Club for their efforts!

We ask that on Thursday night at the Girls JV/Varsity Basketball games vs. Manistique High School, that you help us fill the gym in orange. There will be shirts available for a minimum $15.00 donation to benefit the Weaver family, see below.

We also ask that students and staff wear orange to school on Friday for a ISD-wide "Orange-Out" in support of the Escanaba community and the Weaver family.

Our hearts go out to the friends and family of Tara and Jerry Weaver, and their children, Noah, Lukas, and Sophia. All three children are a part of the Escanaba school district community.

IMPS be nice. Club Encourages Fellow Students to “Stand for Another”

1/30/2023

Picture
One by one, students stood up in the Iron Mountain High School Auditorium, then silently sat back down. “Stand if you relate with this statement, social media, at a time, has had a negative effect on me or someone I care about.” Dozens of students again raise from their seats as eyes scan the room, then sit back down. “I feel like my friends are fake and do not care about me.” Dozens more stand silently, then sit down again. Several more statements are read from the stage, and each time, varying numbers of staff and students across the auditorium rise from their seats.

Days before, Iron Mountain High School and Central Middle School students and staff participated in a classroom activity led by members of the school be nice. group.  Students were provided a list of statements and were asked to anonymously choose which statements they related to. Statements included phrases such as, “Bullying has affected me or someone I love,” and “Sometimes I don’t like who I am as a person.”

Be nice. advisors then gathered the information, and the group members presented the eye-opening data to the middle and high school student body after their “Stand Up for Another” activity. Through this activity and assembly, the club set out to show the student body they are not alone in thinking certain thoughts and to bring awareness to the importance of prioritizing mental health.

Be nice. is a student led group with the mission of de-stigmatizing mental health issues and preventing bullying. The activity and assembly was suggested by be nice. Co-chair, junior Hailey Greenleaf, who participated in a similar event at a MYLead student leadership conference at Michigan State University in the spring of 2022. "I learned a lot at the MyLead conference, but the biggest thing that has stuck with me since last May is this activity. It was just eye opening to see that young people all across Michigan are going through the same things even if they do not say it out loud. As soon as we did this activity there, I knew I wanted to bring it back to IMHS, so that others could see that they are not alone."

AP Computer Science Principles class earns Gender Diversity Award

1/20/2023

Renee Yake’s Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles (AP CSP) class at Iron Mountain High School recently earned recognition for their female student presence in computer science education. Iron Mountain High School achieved 72 percent female representation in the AP CSP class in the 2021-2022 school year, earning the College Board AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award.

“It has always been a top priority for me to encourage young women in the math field. Showing high school girls the many STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) career opportunities out there is so important. I love helping all students gain confidence in both math and coding.” Mrs. Yake has been teaching high school math for 29 years, and the AP Computer Science Principles course for six years at IMHS.

College Board research says, female students who take AP CSP in high school are more than five times as likely to major in computer science in college, compared to female students of similar background and academic preparation who did not take CSP. 2019 Iron Mountain graduate, Natalie Dykhuis, was a student of Yake’s, and speaks highly of the course. She now attends St. Norbert’s College in De Pere, Wisconsin, and will be graduating with her degree in Computer Science Education in 2023. “CSP introduced me to the basics of computer science while making me feel equal to everyone. With the knowledge I gained from this class and the encouragement of Mrs. Yake, I realized that computer science was my passion.”

Mrs. Yake loves “teaching AP CSP through code.org's outstanding curriculum, which provides equitable teaching practices and empowers students to learn new things.”

Iron Mountain Public Schools Board of Education members Lisa Carollo, Shari Picucci-White, and Ben DeRidder were sworn in at the Iron Mountain Organizational Board of Education meeting held on Monday, January 9, 2023. Carollo and DeRidder will each serve six year terms, ending December 2028. Picucci-White’s term will end December 2026.

Iron Mountain Public Schools welcomes Ben DeRidder, a new addition to the Iron Mountain Board of Education. DeRidder was a write-in candidate in the November 2022 election. He is a local residential designer, parent, and husband to Iron Mountain Special Education teacher, Audra DeRidder. He attended Kingsford High School and Ferris State University, where he earned his BA in Business Administration and Minor in Marketing and Sales. He is “excited to be involved with the school and to make a positive impact with students, parents, and teachers.” Read more about the Iron Mountain Public Schools Board of Education here.

Foz Burgoon was honored at the January 9 meeting for her seven years of dedication to the Iron Mountain Public School district during her time as Board of Education Trustee from 2015-2022. Superintendent Jerry Sardina and the Board of Education thank Foz for her service to the students, staff, and families of Iron Mountain.

The school board members were surprised by a banner handmade by the students of North and East Elementary, recognizing and thanking them for their dedication and loyalty to Iron Mountain Schools for “School Board Recognition Month” and each were given a personalized Iron Mountain School Board to-go mug.

The Iron Mountain Public School District exists in part because individuals volunteer their time to make informed decisions about the issues facing public schools. During the first month of the year, the staff, students, and families of the Iron Mountain community recognize, thank, and celebrate the seven individuals who make up the Iron Mountain Public School Board of Education and celebrate School Board Recognition Month.

-Rob Langsford, President, serving on the IMPS Board of Education since 2011, term expires in 2024.
-Lisa Basanese, Vice President, serving on the IMPS Board of Education since 2008, term expires in 2024.
-Lisa Carollo, Secretary, serving on the Board of Education since 2015, term expires in 2028.

-Geno Basanese, Trustee, serving on the Board since 2018, term expires in 2024.
-Ben DeRidder, Trustee, serving on the Board since 2023, term expires in 2028.

The job of a school board member is tough, the hours long and the thanks few and far between. These dedicated volunteers reside in our community. They are our friends, neighbors, community leaders, engaged citizens and parents at your school. During this month of recognition, we ask you to show your appreciation for their service. Please show your gratitude in some way for their time, effort and dedication to public education’s advancement. Most importantly, thank them for being everyday heroes and making our students’ success their priority.

So on behalf of the students, and the staff at Iron Mountain Public Schools- thank you board members for everything you do!
