Social Studies
Iron Mountain High School proudly offers classes in History (both world and US), Sociology, Economics, Geography, Civics, and Government to give students a wide range of learning opportunities.  This curriculum provides a basic foundation for the study of all social sciences and is an excellent tool whether students plan to attend an institution of higher learning or not.
 
World History
World History is a one semester required freshman-level course. This course is designed and organized to instill an appreciation of man's past efforts to meet everyday problems that affect the basic institutions of all cultures, i.e, the family, the economy, the government, religion, and education.
World Geography
World Geography is a one semester required freshman-level course. This course studies the cultural aspects of geography. The emphasis will be on major areas of the physical world such as Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The development of a background in map reading and interpretation of data will also be covered.
Civics
The Primary emphasis in Civics is centered on two levels. The first level will deal with basic levels of the government and it's set-up at local, state, and national levels . The second will deal with the basic concepts of economics.
Government
This is a one semester course providing knowledge and an understanding of the  system of government in which we live, work, and play. The course of study involves studying our system in comparison with others.
Economics
This course will present a basic foundation of factors determining your lifestyle. As individuals, we have a profound effect on the world's raw materials and markets. We may be individuals but our collective decisions add up to a growing interdependence of nations in regard to economics. These factors influence the availability of jobs for individuals. Students will also learn about investments and savings with the use of the stock market gain, business welfare, money and banking procedures.
Sociology/Current Problems
Sociology/Current Problems is a semester course aimed at introducing the student to a variety of age old problems that face our society today such as racism, crime, and divorce. The student will also examine current problems that confront society including foreign policy, government regulation, and personal relations. This class is most valuable as a basic foundation for the study of all social sciences.
US History 1865-1930
This time period of study will take students from the rebuilding of the nation after the American Civil War to the era of the great depression.
US History From 1930
The first semester covers three major areas of study: 1) The Great Depression. 2) World War 2.  3) The Cold War and The Korean War. The second semester will cover three major areas also 1) The Vietnam War. 2)The conservative Movement (Reagan/Bush). 3) The United States in today's world.
