Department Description

IMHS is a leader in the teaching of English. Graduates of IMHS are always well-prepared for English in college. A veteran cast of teachers leads this renown department. With courses including composition, speech, literature, and publications, students exit high school with the most excellent skills around. We are proud of our rich tradition in the area of English.

English 9

This is a full year, freshman level course that students must pass for graduation.  During the first semester, students concentrate on grammar, MLA guidelines for papers, sentence structure, and paragraph organization.  Students are also exposed to rudimentary research paper.  The second semester course combines written communication skills with an introduction to literature appreciation as students apply widely used literary terms to the study of an epic poem, a novel, and a play.

Sophomore English is an integration of speech and writing.
Speech gives students the opportunity to improve oral communication skills on the interpersonal, small group, and public speaking levels.  Speech presentation includes personal presentation, reading, speaking from notes, and extemporaneous speaking.  Listening, critical thinking, and the utilization of research are also included.
Writing emphasizes the writing process and student revision with preparation before turning in a completed paper. Writing includes student response to questions requiring critical thinking skill, essay, narrative, descriptive, expository, and persuasive writing.  Students develop a paper using the techniques of Modern Language including documentation.

English 11

This is a full year course required of all juniors.  It is a survey of literature produced by Americans from the settlement of the New World in 1620 to the present day.  It is designed to develop an awareness of the American social and cultural heritage through literature. The course content will include readings of poetry, essays, short stories, and novels.  It will include analysis and explication of the material.  It will also include some experimentation in creative writing relative to material studied  authors such as William Bradford, Thomas Paine, Edgar Allan Poe, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Emily Dickinson, Mark Twain, Stephen Crane, Ernest Hemingway, Robert Frost, and Arthur Mill will be studied.

English 12

 Senior Class Only

This course will provide the senior student an opportunity to refine writing, grammar, and general communication skills in preparation for post high school education and the work world.  Students will be expected to write paragraphs, themes, and compositions on carious topics. These writings will be evaluated on the use of proper grammar, appropriate style, and clarity of presentation of ideas.  The research paper will be taught.  The course will address researching method as well as commonly accepted standards used for documentation of research. A limited exposure to British literature will be included in the curriculum.  The course is intended as reinforcement for communication and linguistic skills previously taught.

Senior English

Senior Class Only

Intended for students who are ready to perform at the college level, this course addresses British and world literature, research procedures, and a refinement of  various writing skills.  It introduces and teaches researching methods as well as commonly accepted standards used for documentation of research.  This course is intended as a strong, preparatory class to enable these students to meet the demands of university composition and literature classes required of all college students.
