PTO Meeting

 (Safe Routes to School

There is a program in Michigan designed to get kids more exercise by having them walk to school.  North Elementary will be having a “Walk to School Day” on May 30th as part of the Safe Routes to School Program.  More information will be sent home before the scheduled walk, including a parent survey and a permission slip.

Yearbook

The yearbooks are here, all the students who ordered yearbooks in the fall should have them.  Thank you to everyone who took pictures and helped with putting the yearbook together.

Saving Programs

North Elementary will be getting $400 from Super One and Econo through the Community Giving and WE SHARE programs.  Please keep saving your grocery receipts and Our Family UPC’s over the summer.  The two stores require the entire receipt.  We receive 1% of the receipt total from each store.  We also participate in Box Tops, Campbell Soup Labels (now saving UPC’s, not front panels) and milk caps (both Foremost Farms and Kemps).

Playground Fence

The school district and the PTO will split the cost of installing a chain link fence around the playground (where the snow fence is).  It will be installed during the summer.

School Picnic

The school picnic will be held on June 4th at the school.  The picnic will be from 10:00 – 11:30 AM and then from 12:30 -2:30 PM.   Morning Kindergarten will keep their normal class times and attend the picnic from 9:30-11:00 AM (yes, they get to start early).  Dev. Kindergarten and Afternoon Kindergarten will have their normal class times and attend the picnic from 12:30 – 2:00 PM.  The PTO is looking for volunteers to help with the picnic.   Each class will wear a different color shirt, please watch for more information.

Dev. Kindergarten News

The DK has had a busy spring!  We've been learning about plants and seeds.  That will lead us into a unit on lifecycles, and we will end the
year learning about space and having some warm weather fun!  We have finished all of the letters in the alphabet.  We are now reviewing sounds, and some of us are blending sounds to read three letter (c-v-c) words.  The DK kids are very excited about our Family Potluck and Music night! It will be a nice time to share some of our favorite songs we've learned during the school year.  Our class would like to thank all of our parents and the PTO at North for all of the "extras" provided to us throughout the year
.

Kindergarten News

The kindergarten children have collected 1,112 milk caps.  They started counting the caps in January and each one brings in 5 cents for
the school. The classes have been working very hard with math skills. They are printing numbers to 30 and counting to 100.  The children are very proud of their reading skills. Each night they bring home a small book that they have read together in class. Their homework is to practice reading the book to anyone  who wants to hear a great story.  The new big book easel (from the proceeds of the PTO’s spring book fair) is great for holding the large books that kindergarten children love!  When Mrs. Hall uses it, all the children can see everything on the page.

First Grade News

As the end of the school year nears, I look at my class and am very proud to see how much they've grown and learned this year.  Because we have such a full curriculum to cover in First Grade, we will be learning and testing Reading and Math skills right through June 1!  Many fun
learning activities will be included in our unit on Michigan.  As part of our study of Michigan, we will stencil Michigan t-shirts in class which the PTO has asked us to wear to the school picnic on June 4.
Thank you for being so cooperative and supportive this year!

Second Grade News

We have begun our 5th theme in reading called, "That's Incredible!"  The students will be reading make-believe and real stories about snakes, dinosaurs, and octopus.  In writing workshop, the second graders have been busy writing
stories about the water cycle.  They had to pretend that they were a water droplet and tell their story as they traveled through the water
cycle.  In social studies we finished a unit on beginning economics.  I was so impressed with how well our little second graders caught on to some "big" economics words and ideas!!!  In science we are going to be busy studying the plant life cycle and planting seeds, and will finish by learning the parts of the eye.  We will actually get to dissect a sheep's eye with the help of Mrs. Carey's high school biology students.  We are planning one more trip to Victorian Pines on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 30.  We are hoping to celebrate with a picnic, bubble blowing, and some kite flying!!!  It has been a wonderful year with this group of second graders!

Third Grade News

The third graders continue to be excited about learning!  In math we are learning about fractions and decimals.  We are into our Weather Watch
theme in reading.  In social studies we are learning about the Rocky Mountain Region, and in science we are going to be researching animals.  We have also been watching first-hand the life cycle of the butterfly in class.  Soon we will have 4 butterflies to release into their natural habitat!  We are planning two big events for the end of the year.  One is a chicken leg dissection that Mrs. Carey's advance biology class will be assisting with.  The other is a field trip to the DeYoung Zoo.  We look forward to a great end of the year of learning!

Fourth Grade News

We will be doing some traveling in the last weeks of school, with planned trips to the Menominee Range Historical Museum, the Iron Mine, and Fayette State Park.  On May 10th  we went to North Dickinson for the Mountain Man Rendezvous.  Thank you to all who helped with our class fundraiser so we could do all these trips!

Fifth Grade News

Star testing, Growth and Development, 2014 signature shirts, Transition Night:  what do these things have in common?  It's the end of the year!
The fifth graders are counting down the days to Transition Night, May 17th, where they can meet the sixth grade teachers and see Central
School.   On May 18th we will be traveling to the Barlow Planetarium in Menasha, WI, where we will have three tour topics:  Earth Science Essentials, Mineral Gallery, and a Walk Through Time.  This will finish with the star show "Interplanetary Adventure."  Thank you to all who helped with our fundraiser for this trip.  "Miss Louisa and the Outlaws" our play, will be performed in the library on Friday, May 25th.  Casting for parts will begin next week. May 25th will also be the last day for Mrs. Londo, our student teacher.  We will all miss her (and her enthusiasm).
