Mission Statement
The Iron Mountain-Kingsford Alternative Education’s Mission is to offer all high school students a second chance at being successful in earning a high school diploma. It is our goal to provide a different type of learning environment that the traditional high school setting cannot afford them. Our objective is to break down the barriers to education, so all types of learners will gain not only an education, but be able to make informed post high school decisions, gain self-respect and contribute in a positive manner to the community in which they live.
About Us……
The IM-K Alternative Education Program encompasses the four school district in Dickinson County. Students come from Iron Mountain, Kingsford, Norway and North Dickinson. The students are all high school students, who for some reason or another need a different type of learning environment that the traditional high school setting cannot afford them. Alternative Education is their second chance to be successful at earning a high school diploma.
The curriculum at Alternative Education is designed to compliment the referring school district’s courses and to accommodate some self-paced and independent studies. It also offers many hands-on classes such as: cooking, sewing, computers, art and physical education. Classes are small so students can receive as much attention from a teacher as they need to be successful. The Alternative Education Program is located inside the Technical Center, students are able to take advantage of the tech classes offered in the building.
Alternative Education is a vital program for the local school districts. It plays an important role in the community by providing young people with another way to learn and grow. Alternative Education breaks down barriers to education for students who are at risk of dropping out of school and for students who need a more intimate environment in which to learn.
Referral Process
In order to be accepted for enrollment, persons must
1. Be in high school with a referral from the local school’s building principals and with an application for admission on file with the Alternative Education Program.
2. All students that have previously been enrolled in the program but have been dropped from the school rosters during one marking period must apply for re-admission. The instructional staff will jointly make the decision concerning re-admission. At this time, the staff make provisions to help the student based on his/her personal situation.
